dBass are Glasgow's pioneering jazzfusion collective, effortlessly delving into hip-hop, soul and contemporaryjazz to create music that is at once pensive, brave and soulful.

The variousmembers of dBass have long been the source of much of Glasgow's live crossover jazz, experimentaland hiphop. The product of an assortment of jazz heads, folk-improvexperimentalists, and contemporary classical players, the band positivelyrelish their unorthodox sensibilities.

The collectivehas already cut its teeth at Glasgow venues TheArches, King Tut’s, The Art School and The QMU, and Edinburgh venues, The Jazz Bar and The BongoClub, and at the Knockengorrach festival. Most recently dBass shared the stage with Red Snapper in apacked King Tut’s. They have played alongsideGrandmaster Flash, Red Snapper, The Herbaliser, Calvin Harris, Guru, ThePortico Quartet, The Hidden Orchestra, Boom Monk Ben and Stuart McCallum(Cinematic Orchestra). dBass have also recorded sessions for Radio Magnetic andSubcity radio.

In August 2008dBass toured with Injuns (aka The Dead Man's Waltz), culminating with the release of asplit single with their tour-mates. Qoral Reef (dBass) / Jake ofMonterey (Injuns) was released as a 7” vinyl and digital download onKopparberg’s Collective label. Qoral Reef was described by The List as“a platter of off-kilter, late-night soul with a jazzy garnish on top."

dBass’ second EP,entitled Garden, was released in a limited edition run in November 2009 andwas subsequently aired on BBC’s Jazz on 3 program.

Their latest EP, Alloy, is due for release on CD in March2012 on the band’s own label. The band are currently performing in and around Glasgow, as well aswriting new material (their members can often be found jamming at theTchai-Ovna on Wednesdays).

It's here. Our new EP, entitled Alloy will be released to the online world on Monday in digital download form on our Bandcamp page! We are very pleased with the job that both Iban P Pineiro and Kenny MacLeod have done in recording, mixing and mastering, and can't wait for everyone to hear it! There is a run of CDs planned for March time, which we shall set up a pre-order for, and in the meantime, enjoy.

Rio have decided to pull out of putting on bands on Saturday nights however, so we will try and set up another residency elsewhere - any suggestions would be gratefully received. We hope you are well! We have been hard at work in August and September rehearsing, recording and mixing a new EP which we are currently mulling over how to release.. It has been engineered by the superb Iban Perez and they are definitely our best recordings to date. Not only that, but one of us has managed to fit in having another kid, while two of us have gone back to uni in one form or another, and between us we've been in France, Portugal, Czech Republic and... Suffolk. So busy busy.

In other news, we shall be supporting Red Snapper at King Tut's on 17th November - they are somewhat heroes of ours it must be said. You can get tickets for £10 from our new shop, and the facebook event is here.

A big thank you to all who came to the Leukaemia Research fundraiser at the Ramshorn Theatre earlier this month. It panned out to be a very friendly gathering and we had a good time playing fairly unplugged in the vastness of the cafe bar there! Some photos of the event are here and a video of Shovel, George's swansong with us for now.

Thanks to the organisers, we hope a lot was raised, and we were glad to play, thinking of Cathy.

The Skinny have got there hands on the Garden EP with a review here. A few copies in this run are still available here, as is the download.

Lots of gigs coming up, including a Jazz Bar date along with Stuart McCallum's (of the Cinematic Orchestra) band on Nov. 19th. Good stuff!

We are proud to announce that we will be performing next week as part of a very special event: Fusion, a concert in aid of the Paul O'Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre with 100% of proceeds going to charity.

As some of you may know, this is a cause that is particularly close to our hearts as our former singer, Cathy, passed away from leukaemia in 2005. Back in that summer we put on a momentous night at the Carnival Arts Centre in her honour, raised a lot of funds and had a great time to boot, and have often thought about doing the same again. Unfortunately this had not yet materialised, so in the mean time we are delighted to be able to be a part of this concert.

As if that wasn't reason enough, this will be Mr. George J. Murray's final dBass concert for the foreseeable future. We are gutted to be losing him, especially as Glasgow's loss is Yorkshire's gain, but are pretending to be terribly understanding about it all. Fraser Clark and Mounzer Sarraf will be amongst guest players.

So a momentous gig it will be. The deets:

We are putting on a gig on the fringes of Glasgow International Jazz Festival at Stereo on the 27th June.

Joining us are The Forgotten Works new project of James Chapman (Colditz/The Pendulums), and JumbleSaleSounds will be DJing us into the late night with some tasty dubby sounds. We will also have Tchai Ovna's festival tea stall providing warm refreshments.

Although dBass couldn't form the core band for this performance of Scope, bassist Stuart and trombonist George are guesting in with Inspector Tapehead, whom Roy is also drumming for. The Forgotten Works is the latest project from James, the man behind Colditz and multifaceted Rutabaga and Pendulums protagonist, as well as some time dBass bassist, and he of the Pendulums, Martin Beer. That was quite a convoluted sentence, sorry.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances, dBass will no longer be doing the Accidental Festival performance of Scope. However hopes are high for a performance in Glasgow soon, apologies for those who were looking forward to it down there!

In other news, we have enhanced our recording of the track Here We Are Again with some new horn parts, so the next run of Garden EPs will feature this new version. We still have a few of the initial run, and also some copies of the previous EP Frantic, both of which can now be purchased via Bandcamp by clicking on 'releases' over on the left there.

Hello folks! Thanks to everyone who came to the Portico Quartet gig in November - we hope you are enjoying that very limited first run of Garden EPs. We had a good time, couldn't squeeze in every tune we had intended, so would like to invite you to hear the set in full..
dBass will be descending on Brace at the Ivy Bar on Tuesday 15th December from 9pm onwards. Brace is our very own Stu's jam session which he hosts every week, and which many of us can often be heard noodling at. So we're squeezing in a special set and jam as a wee Christmas pressie, in the charmingly relaxed, rum soaked vibes of Glasgow's friendliest bar. Do get down there.

Mounzer Sarraf

Guitar, plenty of effects, and some superfast vocals, not to mention all round good egged excellence.

George Murray

Trombone, or 'paperclip', if you will. George's wit and charm seem to land him with numerous other gigs which have included Colditz, The Glasgow Improvisor's Orchestra and the Mosa Funk Club.

Fraser Clark

Keys. Soulmaster. A quiet man who manages to avoid being photographed, Fraser has been solely responsible for most of dBass' finer grooves. Fraser now joins us rather more occasionally, having moved southwards. Only-photo-in-existence by Suzy Ferguson.

Steve Boyle

Having previously drummed for dBass, Steve rejoined us tinking and thocking various percussive items. He also did an enormous amount of working producing the Garden EP, which we are very proud of.

Quest

Beatbox, raps, mad sounds etc. Quest also runs the useful 17thLetter network. Photo by David Crawford.

Tasha Nixon

Having been the only remaining student in the band for all of 07/08, Tasha has now become a noy-student and is moving on to pursue theatrical and tennis related ambitions, though I'm sure she will continue to guest as circumstances allow.

Euan Allardice

Trumpet-type-horn. Euan is a busy chap. He plays with another of dBass' favourite bands, The 44s (as in the bus), as well as How to Swim and a few other Glasgow acts, which is why no-one can ever be sure where he will be at a given moment. Like a quantum particle, if you were to know this, you wouldn't know how much speed he has, which might defeat the point of locating him... photo by Lorraine Ross.

Graham Local

What can we say? Over-qualified bassist previously of Unkle Bob fame, heavyweight of the international jazz scene (the last not quite true, but practically..)

Wayan

Wayan is a man on a mission. No one knows quite what it is, presumably one to funk heaven and back. Or something. Having run the gauntlet by running dBass' sound for several months without one ounce of thanks for it, Wayan rightly concluded that his multi-instrumental talents would be better put to use on bass. Which makes my task all the more daunting as he's also a drumming force to be reckoned with sitting solid behind one of the three steering wheels of TAG's crazy armoured jazz tank. Crowe

Congas, Bongos, Synth, spontaneous vocal noises. It is my belief that Crowe knows everyone in Glasgow. He is a certified pyrotechnician. Not many people can say that. We haven't seen him for a while.

Jon Cooper

Bass, pod mangled or not as the case may be. He is setting up a teahouse in Edinburgh, so is away at the moment.

Windmill

He scratches the vinyl. He is also part of the Ill Technique and helps run Subclub's new homebrew/instant access night. He also helps out at Radio Magnetic. Or he would be if he wasn't off galavanting around the globe for two years.

Murphy

Guitar and conceptual post modern composition, sound artist, currently on sabbatical in London village.

Ken Broom

He played tenor sax and the whirly tube thing and the kalimba. The band has lost a certain air of intellectuality since his departure it must be said. Ken gave up being a BBC archivist to study Slavonics at Glasgow, which is pretty cool. He has numerous wealthy and powerful friends and some of them less so, like Belle and Sebastien, the Glasgow Improvisor's Orchestra and Scatter. He is allegedly in Berlin.

Cathy Kungu

Incredible friend and singer. Cathy was often heard doing what she loved, singing jazz/soul solo and with ensembles across the city. See Kunguland, or contact the band to make a donation to the Cathy Kungu Leukaemia Research Fund. Get yourself on the bone marrow register too.

Geoff Widdowsen

I miss Geoff's keyboard/synth experimentations in the early days of the band, before he went on to concentrate on the highly successful Unkle Bob. Geoff also set up and runs Friendly Sounds, the amiable record label, and is a major protaganist among those psychiatric patients Kill Binary Kill and Rutabaga.

Ken Cowen

Back in the day when Crowe convinced us he could rap, Ken was his partner in crime shifting the beatbox blame between the pair. Word has it he is in Oz. He rides a cool bike.

Mark Watt

The original dBasser, the little pixie. Insanely skilled on the jazz fusion guitar front, Mark rapidly bored of the band to pursue fame and fortune in the aeronautics business. It could have been so different...

Hello! To update yous all, we will be supporting the Portico Quartet at The Arches on 5th November. That's right, what better way to avoid a hurled rocket on the streets of Glasgow than in an underground cavern?

Sadly we have to announce that due to some kind of breakdown in communications, we will no longer be performing at the Oxjam Takeover on the weekend of the 24th/25th. Tis a shame, but it looks to be a fine weekend lineup wise so I'm sure you will get your money's worth over and over again by turning out!

dBass will be playing as part of the Oxjam Glasgow Festival, between the 24th and 25th October. The festival will take place in the Merchant City, more details to follow.

We've had a quiet summer due to various changes in the lineups of various members' families, but we are excited to be doing a bit more this autumn. The Garden EP is slated for readiness on November 1st, and we are rehearsing some new ideas for audio/visual jamming to go with it!
